A Story of Returning Hope

By: Susan Weathersby, Director of Development

Sometimes the bravest step is not the first one forward, but the decision to come back.

One of our alumnae returned to The Next Door Recovery this winter carrying new life and a renewed hope she once feared she had lost. She arrived pregnant, humbled, and ready to begin again.

After leaving last summer, she tried to rebuild her life on her own. For a time, she stayed sober, something she had never done before without medication. But fear, isolation, and an unhealthy relationship slowly pulled her away from safety. Even then, she held onto what she had learned here.

“I would lay in bed and read my Bible,” she shared. “That was the only thing I couldn’t mess up.”

Scripture and prayer became her anchor. In moments when she felt trapped and powerless, faith reminded her that she was not alone.

Eventually, circumstances forced a choice. Pregnant and afraid, she found the courage to leave everything behind and seek help again. On Valentine’s Day, she returned to The Next Door Recovery.

“I didn’t just want to exist anymore,” she said. “I wanted to live.”

During her first time at The Next Door, something shifted deeply within her. For the first time, she wanted sobriety for herself, not for family or to meet anyone else’s expectations, but because she wanted a different life.

That faith has continued to shape her healing.

Through spiritual care, prayer, and consistent presence, she experienced a peace she had never known before. “It’s calm,” she said. “It’s peaceful. And I want that kind of peace in my life.”

Now back in care, she is focused on stability, healing, and preparing for motherhood with hope instead of fear. She speaks openly about humility, forgiveness, and learning to truly believe she is loved, even after a relapse.

“I was embarrassed when I came back,” she admitted. “But I’m learning there’s no shame here. I’m learning to forgive myself.”

At 26 years old, she is discovering life beyond survival. For the first time, she is not just chasing the next crisis or the next escape. She is imagining a future.

“I’m excited to see what life can be,” she said. “I’ve never really gotten to live before.”

Her story is one of courage, faith, and return. A reminder that healing is not linear, grace is not withdrawn, and new beginnings are always possible.
