Healing Together: The Next Door Recovery’s Family Education Group

By Jessica Brooks, Family Therapist

Recovery is not a journey meant to be walked alone. Nearly two years ago, The Next Door Recovery relaunched its Family Education Group with a clear purpose: to support families, deepen understanding of addiction, and strengthen the relationships that are essential to lasting recovery. Since then, the group has become a meaningful source of encouragement, learning, and connection for many families and their loved ones.

Addiction affects more than the individual. It impacts entire families. The Family Education Group creates a safe and welcoming space where families can learn about the realities of addiction, explore healthy ways to support their loved ones in recovery, and gain tools to care for themselves along the way. Through shared experiences and guided discussions, participants often discover that they are not alone in their questions, concerns, or hopes.

One of the most powerful aspects of the group is the sense of community it builds. Families come together to listen, learn, and encourage one another. As trust develops within the group, many participants begin to see recovery from a new perspective, one that includes compassion, understanding, and renewed strength.

The group is offered both virtually and in person, allowing families to participate in ways that best fit their schedules and comfort levels. For those who attend in person, there is an especially meaningful opportunity for clients and their families or supporters to participate together in shared activities. These moments can sometimes feel uncomfortable at first, but they often become powerful experiences of connection, growth, and encouragement. Completing activities side by side helps families rebuild trust, strengthen communication, and celebrate progress together.

Over the past two years, the Family Education Group has continued to demonstrate how healing can take place not only individually, but collectively. By bringing families and clients together in learning and support, The Next Door Recovery is helping create stronger foundations for long-term recovery and healthier relationships.

As the family therapist facilitating this group, I am honored and grateful to be a part of this journey with our clients and their families as they grow, learn, and heal together.

Recovery is stronger when families grow together, and this group continues to make that possible every week.
